I took a reference photograph for this painting in 2020 during the pandemic, hence the empty pool. It was the year we had booked flights back home to the UK that we sadly had to cancel. It was a period of time that everyone and everything slowed down and it felt like time stood still. The calm still water is a reflection of this feeling. Fast forward 3 years to 2023 and we are finally taking that flight.

When we stumbled across Whale Beach, we thought we had found a hidden piece of paradise. It felt secluded and hidden away as we had the beach to ourselves one evening. Not long after arriving in Australia, Isaac then 11 stood at the edge of this pool staring and watching in awe at the surfers in the sea. Isla age 8, went into the pool with her clothes on, not wanting to miss out on exploring this beautiful ocean pool. It was the start of what was to become their new lives in Australia. I’m so glad I captured this moment in time.

“Autumn” was part of a series of Still Life paintings. A look at everyday objects around the house. I like to use my dresses to create patterned backgrounds and play with pattern on pattern and contrasting colours together. I started painting Still life during the Sydney lockdown, when we couldn’t venture too far away from the house and generally being indoors due to
homeschooling, I used the objects around me to influence my paintings.

Spending time as a family is what we love to do on the weekends. Walking, talking, beach visits, coffee and cafe visits. Shelly was the first beach we spent time on with the new addition to our family - Baby Arlo.
I love that the beaches hold different meanings and memories for different people.

For special occasions as a family we head to Harbord Diggers. On this particular evening we were treated to a beautiful sunset as we wandered along the boardwalk and walked along the beach. Spending time as a family, being next to the ocean and moments like these, makes me really appreciate living in Australia.
